Super-matériaux : la science-fiction peut-elle devenir réalité ?

On peut penser à la Kryptonite dans le comics Superman, au Duracier dans le film StarWars ou encore au Cavorite dans le roman Les premiers hommes dans la Lune. Or, bien souvent, ces super-matériaux semblent complètement hors de portée et restent cantonnés au domaine de la fiction. Au point qu’aujourd’hui, les fans de science-fiction utilisent même un mot très précis pour désigner ces matériaux fictifs aux propriétés impossibles : unobtainium. Une terminologie qui n’est d’ailleurs pas sans rappeler un minéral présent dans le film Avatar. Pourtant, les matériaux de la science fiction continuent de fasciner les scientifiques, en témoigne notamment la devise du département de physique des matériaux du Georgia Institute of Technology à Atlanta aux Etats-Unis, qui dit –je cite : « Nous transformons la science-fiction d’hier en réalité d’aujourd’hui ». Alors, quels sont les super pouvoirs des matériaux de la science fiction ? Quels sont leurs fondements scientifiques ? A quelle condition pourraient-ils devenir une source d’inspiration pour les sciences des matériaux ? Et qui sait, est-ce qu’un jour certains matériaux de science-fiction finiront par devenir les matériaux de demain ?


Intervenant: Roland Lehoucq, Astrophysicien au Commissariat à l'énergie atomique, enseignant, auteur et vulgarisateur. Il a connu des succès auprès du grand public avec ses livres "D'où viennent les pouvoirs de Superman ?"

By 2050, almost 70% of the world population will live in cities. All over the world, people continue to long for an urban way of life, synonym of work, prosperity and comfort. To give you some figures, according to the latest United Nations report, the urban population of the world has grown rapidly from 751 million in 1950 to 4.2 billion in 2018. After the United States, Latin America and Europe, Asian and African populations, which used to live mainly in the countryside, are also changing. How can cities cope with this massive trend? All of them try to fight against different types of pollution. Sustainable development depends increasingly on the successful management of urban growth, especially in low-income countries where the most rapid urbanization is expected. Policy makers, builders, and architects on all continents look for solutions to provide sustainable housing and buildings at an affordable price. Is it possible? Or, are comfy and sustainable buildings luxury solutions for rich countries only? Some large scales projects already seem promising. The capital of Colombia has just authorized the building of a High Environmental Quality social housing complex, according to international standards… But can we build houses in Bogota the same way as in New Dehli’s suburbs or in Johannesburg? Can there be international standards for healthy and durable housing? Is it what people want?

Reconstructing Notre-Dame de Paris

As you all know, in April 2019 a massive fire ravaged Paris’s cathedral commonly known as the “old lady”. And it was not only the visible parts of the monument that have gone up in smoke but also the hundreds of hours of work done by builders, masons, glassmakers craftsmen and architects… To paraphrase Arthur Lochmann, philosopher and carpenter, author of Solid Life. "The frame as the ethic of doing —the cathedral is in itself less the symbol of the greatness of eternity than the measure, rather, of time passing." Precisely because this construction is the incarnation of all the hours spent on this grandiose site, result of a massive collective effort. The construction of the cathedral took nearly 200 years, almost as long as the entire gothic period, it is one of the most important examples of the Gothic style in the world. But after grieving, now comes the time to act and rebuild this monument, so fundamental to Paris’s cultural identity. President Macron, announced a few days following the tragic incident that he wanted the reconstruction to be completed in 5 years — ready for the 2024 Olympics that are set to take place in Paris. This raises many questions regarding how the cathedral is going to be rebuilt under these circumstances, what it will look like (a replica of the past or with a contemporary touch) and also which materials can be used to meet the needs of this challenging project. A lot of ink has spilled on the topic in the recent news, but now, we’ll speak about Notre Dame’s reconstruction through the prism of materials. To guide you through the different challenges raised by this reconstruction project, we will focus on the different areas that were affected by the fire : first the façade, the roof with its vaults and finally the spire. For each of these areas we will question which materials will be used, how and for what purpose?
