[REPLAY] S2#61🇺🇸🇬🇧 Two unique school projects in Noyon (60) France

The Vallet de Martinis architects office won the competition of the construction of two school complex launched by the City of Noyon in France. These buildings were conceived in a contextual way on the scale of the historic lower town, organized around the pure Gothic cathedral. 

In this Com d'Archi S2#61 Esther, on behalf of Anne-Charlotte, read the story written by the architects of this two projects of school delivered in 2020.

Ils étaient des amis d'enfance. Ils sont aujourd'hui un duo d'architectes dont l'agence est implantée à Paris et à Bordeaux. Ils réalisent des projets majoritairement publics et sont soumis au processus ardu des concours d'architecture.

Dans ce CDA S2#60, au fil de leur interview, Antoine Vallet et Guillaume de Martinis montrent combien un sens de la fidélité hors norme, une vocation convergente, ont permis leur association singulière. D'Europan, au projet d'un musée ethnographique à Budapest (frère non abouti d'un projet de Sou Fujimoto), en passant par des conceptions d'écoles et d'établissements de santé, ils racontent leurs parcours d'architectes humanistes, humbles et passionnés.

S4#45 🇺🇸🇬🇧 Itv, "A fertile imagination for building" with Jeff Kovel, Skylab Architecture office

This is the third interview in Com d'Archi with architects or engineers working in the United States. From the practice of the daring Frenchman Jean-Michel Humbert, based in Washington, to that of the great engineer Eric Long, of one of the most important architectural firms in the world, SOM, and now Jeff Kovel, architect and founder of Skylab Architecture, who delivered the fascinating world headquarters of the sports brand Nike in 2022. Both of them work from the West Coast of the USA. It is very interesting to see how the American architect sees the way to build today and on a large scale, in the context of climate challenges.

I know that the most informed of Com d'archi's listeners, and not the least, have already fully appreciated the opportunity that these unpublished testimonies represent in France in order to understand the different ways of apprehending the practice: differences in scale and energy, network logics, etc. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all our listeners, whether they are lay people or experts, new or faithful to the program, to push their curiosity and listen to this new testimony! They will not be disappointed.

Did you know that Nike has just delivered its world headquarters in Portland? This project covers an area of 140 tennis courts. How can such an achievement meet the ecological challenges of our era? That's what we're going to talk about today through the testimony of the founder Jeff Kovell of the architectural firm Skylab who designed this building, with the great Serena Williams associated to the creation process, as well as the executives and teams of the American giant Nike. But not only because Jeff Kovel, in his life, also crossed the singer Lenny Kravitz and designed without knowing it the house of the series Twilight became cult!

L'agence Skylab architecture a été fondée en 1999 par Jeff Kovel dans un bâtiment qui domine la ville de Portland en Oregon aux Etats-Unis. Jeff Kovel, auparavent, avait grandi dans une maison d'architecte dans l'état de New York. Qu'est-ce qui l'a amené à aller s'installer dans une ville connue aux Etats-Unis pour ses aléas climatiques? Comment l'architecte aujourd'hui vit le changement climatique et en transpose les effets dans son architecture ? En outre, il s'est vu confier des projets devenus emblématiques telle la maison de Twilight, et très récemment l'immense projet du siège mondial de Nike portant le nom de Serena Williams.

Au détour de la maison de Lenny Kravitz, dans ce numéro de Com d'Archi, nous relatons le parcours de Jeff Kovel, mais surtout son projet du siège mondial Serena Williams de Nike. Une incroyable aventure d'architecte, concentré dans ce condensé de l'interview de Jeff Kovel (interview en anglais et publiée à partir du 8 février 2023).

L'agence COVE est née en 2018 de l'envie de travailler ensemble d'Axel Cornu et de Gabriel Verret . Puis le champ s'élargit et les échelles se confrontent, avec toujours, ce pas de côté, qui fait toute la singularité de cette jeune agence.

Encore Heureux est une agence d'architecture fondée sur la base d'un collectif. A leur tête : Julien Choppin et Nicola Delon fondateurs, rejoints par Sébastien Eymard en 2016, lui-même suivi de Sonia Vu en 2019. Encore Heureux Architectes devient très identifié dans le paysage architectural mondial, à l'occasion de la Biennale d'Architecture de Venise en 2018, où le commissariat et la scénographie de l'exposition du pavillon français leur est confiée; ils y déclineront leur exposition sur le thème "Lieux Infinis". L'essentiel de leur engagement y apparait clairement : assumer un rôle humaniste, et stimuler la transition écologique. C'est cet "essentiel" qui intéresse Com d'Archi, mis en perspective à la lumière de la discipline architecturale.

A l'occasion du Com d'archi S2#56, Nicola Delon, habitué des médias, révèle qu'il s'agit de sa cinquième interview accordée ces jours-ci ! Cela tombe bien, il n'est pas question de tourner en boucle, mais de comprendre. De quelle manière ces architectes-là se distinguent ? Très engagés dans la démarche écologique, quels sont leurs projets "d'avenir" ? Dans notre interview soigneusement construite "hors clichés", Nicola Delon nous parle justement de ses débuts, de la naissance du collectif Encore Heureux, de leurs projets d'hier, d'aujourd'hui, de demain, et de cette immense responsabilité que nous avons tous d'assurer l'avenir de notre planète !

"Agence parisienne de conception lumières, l’atelier H. Audibert imagine et compose des mises en lumières qui parachèvent la perception des lieux." La formule parait simple, mais cette discipline ne l'est pas. Car l'éclairage de l'espace, même s'il bénéficie de conditions naturelles intrinsèques, n'est pas donné d'emblée. Son immatérialité, sa symbolique le rendent magique. Pour Hervé Audibert, il résulte d'années d'expérience acquises à l'école du théâtre. Aujourd'hui, il oeuvre à toutes les échelles, aux côtés d'architectes de renoms.

Dans ce Com d'Archi, Hervé Audibert nous raconte la manière dont il a démarré sa carrière, aux côtés de scénographes pour lesquels tout avait un sens. In 1936, two architects and an engineer formed a partnership; their founders understood the power of combining their expertise within a single firm. Since then, SOM has grown to include urban designers and planners, interior designers, and more. Their teams are composed of designers with an artistic sensibility, architects and engineers with highly specialized technical knowledge, and planners with a deep understanding of policy and economics. The synthesis of these viewpoints generates design solutions that no single person could have imagined on their own. From sustainable engineering, to healthcare design, to regenerative city planning, none of their areas of expertise stands alone. Each is deeply interwoven with the others, informing and being informed by them.

An exceptional "recipe", since 1936, the office has become one of the most prestigious in the United States and the world.

About the interview

Eric Long is a structural engineer and partner in SOM. Very used to international relations, he did not hesitate to receive me in their San Francisco office on January 3rd (2023). I asked him the usual questions in Com d'Archi, about his background, his desire for engineering and architecture, the projects he has led, the DNA of SOM and his vision for the future. What I got from him was a resolutely positive stance, coupled with that special American energy. Our scales there and here are not the same. And their challenges are colossal, especially when it comes to seismic problems. Their work in California is unique, I hope that through this interview you will be able to appreciate the stakes! L'agence d'architecture Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) a vu le jour en 1936, lorsque Louis Skidmore et Nathaniel Owings se sont associés à Chicago. Un deuxième bureau a été ouvert à New York l'année suivante. En 1939, le partenariat adopte son nom actuel avec l'ajout d'un troisième membre, l'architecte et ingénieur structurel John O. Merrill. Depuis, l'agence est devenue l'une des plus prestigieuses des Etats-Unis.

Dans ce numéro de Com d'Archi, nous résumons l'interview de l'associé de l'agence Eric Long, ingénieur de structures, qui témoigne sur son parcours et sur le travail exceptionnel qui est mené en Californie, notamment à l'agence de San Francisco de SOM en matière de recherche et d'innovations. Une interview à découvrir dans le numéro en anglais. Cette généreuse interview a été enregistrée le 3 janvier 2023 dans l'agence de San Francisco, sans interprète (ce qui aurait été plus confortable). En dépit de cela, il en ressort un élan remarquable, propre à cette agence qui oeuvre sur de très grands projets certes, mais laquelle n'oublie aucunement que la ville est à transformer face aux nombreux défis climatiques ! Bien au contraire.

A big and special project in wood explains by the architects themselves!

As this building is the headquarters of the Organizing Committee for the 2024 Olympic Games, located in the main future olympic site, in Saint-Denis near Paris.

"Pulse is a seven-storey office building. The building’s core – a vast atrium – is covered with a glass roof letting the natural coming into the wooden nave. The rigor of the construction system contrasts with the warm atmosphere and colors of the workplace..."

Trois personnalités bien identifiés dans le paysage architectural français, les associés de BFV se sont regroupés, riches de leurs parcours respectifs, en 2018 ! Un sacré pari que de de s'associer à la maturité ! La valeur collective, l'éternel optimisme ont rendu cette nouvelle aventure possible.

Michel Rémon, architecte, est connu pour son franc parlé. Il est surtout un homme des grandes échelles et des grands territoires, avec à son actif, d'importants projets dont la haute technicité doit être soulignée. 

Dans son interview "Com d'Archi", diffusée en deux épisodes, il raconte son parcours, évoquant par exemple, la chance qu'il a eu de bénéficier de l'accès à la commande grâce à la loi de janvier 1977. Il nous parle de ses projets, tel le Laboratoire de la Police Scientifique à Ecully, n'oubliant jamais de citer les maîtres d'ouvrages. Il évoque ses convictions d'architecte et exprime, entre autres, le regret qu'aujourd'hui, la critique architecturale ait quasiment disparu.
